What is the Science Behind Using CBD for Veterans

CBD for Veterans | Can It Be Benefecial

Many veterans are living with chronic pain and mental issues from their time in active service. The NIH reports that over 65.6 percent of veterans report having chronic pain (over three months or longer). The Veteran Association reports that over 15 percent suffer from PTSD, while 8 percent suffer from depression (1). CBD Oil is a promising therapy that has been shown to help veterans cope with the physical and mental issues they suffer daily.

While this therapy is still in its infancy, it has already shown a host of positive results for pain, anxiety, and PTSD, three of the most common symptoms among veterans.

What is CBD Oil?

There are many varieties of the plant Cannabis sativa. These plants have varying degrees of Cannabidiol (CBD) compounds and delta- Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is better known because it is the psychoactive component that causes euphoria. CBD is a non-addictive and non-psychoactive component that has been shown as helpful in relieving symptoms of chronic pain and anxiety disorders.

CBD oil is made by extracting the CBD component in the hemp plant (any C. Sativa plant with less than 0.3% THC) and suspending the extract in pure plant-based oils, like coconut and olive oils. This makes it easier to take.

CBD can be inhaled using vape pens, dropped directly onto the tongue, or applied on the skin and massaged in. Vaping or sublingual ingestion provides higher bioavailability, which means higher blood concentrations once taken. For localized pain, direct topical application can relieve pain.

How Can Organic CBD Oil Help Me?

Research into the benefits and potential effects of CBD continues to increase, but significant evidence shows CBD oil for veterans can help them face common problems, including:

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Between 10 and 20 percent of veterans live with PTSD – over 3-6 times higher than PTSD numbers in the general population.

Veterans who suffer from PTSD experience persistent and distressing symptoms like nightmares and flashbacks from their active service time. They also have elevated baseline levels of stress or fear and may avoid certain people or places that remind them of being at war. Insomnia, anxiety, and depression are common in people with PTSD.

PTSD is usually treated using SSRIs or anti-depressants together with psychotherapy, but these medications have adverse side effects too. Research has shown that administering CBD can change memory processing to minimize negative emotions connected with specific memories (2) . CBD also blocks the retrieval of traumatic memories and creates an anti-depressant like state to reduce anxiety response to traumatic memories.

Consistently using CBD for PTSD creates a new feedback loop, so that veterans remember their trauma less frequently and with a lessened emotional response. Unlike anti-depressant medication, CBD oils are well-tolerated, especially pure, high-quality oils from trusted sources.

Used for Pain

Chronic pain from war-related injuries is a major problem for veterans. Severe pain is more common among young and middle-aged veterans. Veterans need to use opioids in the long-term, leading to opioid addiction and high risk of overdose.

However, research shows that CBD effectively manages chronic pain, not just for veterans. It is now prescribed for palliative pain relief in end-stage cancer patients. This research study showed that CBD being used for pain was more effective than opioids.

Over time, this helps relieve inflammation response contributing to chronic pain, so that the individual perceives pain less intensely. It changes the brain’s pain response in almost a similar way to how it acts for PTSD above.

Can Natural Treatments Help With Anxiety

Similar to treatments for PTSD, CBD can lessen the anxiety response to stressful situations. A DAA reports that anxiety affects more than 40 million people in the US, making it the most common mental disorder (3). Among veterans, cases of anxiety have increased by 327 percent in the last 20 years.

In veterans, anxiety may show up on its own or in conjunction or other related issues. Veterans often feel constantly on edge – a direct result of their time in direct combat. Even seemingly-harmless things in daily life may trigger flashbacks and leave them feeling fearful and anxious.

According to one study done in rats exposed to a predator, rats that received multiple CBD doses over one week had fewer anxiety symptoms than those who didn’t. This has shown that the use of CBD oils in the longer term may help to reduce general anxiety.

CBD for Insomnia

Cannabinoids can also be used to treat sleeplessness, night terrors, nightmares, lucid dreams, and other sleep disorders. Insomnia is the single largest predictor of PTSD. Lack of quality sleep raises the cortisol levels in the body, resulting in tens of harmful effects throughout the body – weight gain, high blood pressure, hormonal imbalance, depressed immunity, etc. Insomnia also attribute to other issues, like anxiety and chronic pain.

CBD oils can be useful as an anti-anxiety treatment, stabilizing sleep patterns, and improving the quality of sleep you receive and overall well-being (4).
